Tattoo Aftercare Guide: Healing with Second Skin
Getting a new tattoo is exciting, but how you care for it afterwards makes all the difference to how well it heals and how it looks long term. I like to use second skin (a thin protective film) for the first stage of healing, as it helps shield your tattoo from dirt and bacteria in those crucial first days. Here’s a clear guide to looking after your tattoo with second skin, and what to expect in the weeks ahead.
The First Few Days: Second Skin
Keep the film on for the time we’ve agreed (usually around 3–5 days, depending on placement and how your skin reacts).
It’s normal to see plasma or ink pooling under the film, don’t worry, this is part of the process.
Avoid picking at the edges or lifting it early unless it comes away on its own.
Removing the Second Skin
Remove the film slowly under warm running water; this makes it much easier and more comfortable.
Once off, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap.
Pat it dry with clean kitchen roll, don’t rub.
Moisturising
Apply a thin layer of a fragrance-free moisturiser such as E45, or a tattoo-specific aftercare balm.
Avoid heavy creams like petroleum jelly, as they can suffocate the tattoo.
Less is more: just enough to keep the skin from feeling tight or dry.
What to Avoid During Healing
Swimming, baths, or hot tubs: If you’re in Exeter and thinking of hitting a local swimming pool or the Lido, wait at least 2–3 weeks before you dip in with a fresh tattoo.
Sports or heavy friction: contact sports, gym sessions, or anything that puts strain on the area can irritate the tattoo. Try to rest it as much as possible during the first couple of weeks.
Sun exposure: keep the tattoo covered or out of direct sun until it’s fully healed.
General Healing Timeline
Days 1–5: Second skin does most of the work.
Days 5–14: Peeling and flaking are normal, don’t pick or scratch.
Weeks 2–4: Skin settles, tattoo starts to look more even.
After 4 weeks: Most tattoos are healed. Keep moisturising and always use SPF on it going forward.
Long-Term Care
Healing doesn’t stop once the skin closes up. To keep your tattoo looking its best:
Stay hydrated and moisturised.
Always use sunscreen on healed tattoos.
Avoid long, unprotected sun exposure.
